Drinking Too Much water will kill you – Water Intoxication
Drinking Too Much water will kill you – Overhydration will Lead to Death
In our schools it was taught that drinking lot of water is good for our health. The more glasses of water you drink, the healthier you will be. How many glass of water should we drink in a day? Have you heard of water intoxication/water poisoning?
What is Water intoxication ?
Everything in excess is not good for the body. Too much water is not good for the body and most of us don’t know that excessive fluid intake will kill us. Drinking more than 5 or 6 litres of water in few hours might lead to death due to water intoxication (water poisoning). When the body is overhydrated it will cause electrolyte (like Sodium) imbalance in the body. Water poisoning will lead to insufficient salt in the blood because sodium in the body will become diluted. This is a serious condition because your body cells start to swell. The person will slowly die when the cells in the brain starts to swell. When the sodium levels in your blood falls it will cause vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations and finally death. Vomiting and drowsiness are the early symptoms of Water intoxication.
Treatment for water intoxication
If the electrolytes in the body is not restored immediately then it will lead to death. You should rush to nearby hospital if you feel sick after overhydration.
People who drink more than five litres of water within few hours are at high risk so they must reduce the water intake. Many people who participated in water drinking contest died due to water intoxication, few of the athletes have also died due to water intoxication. Sports trainers should make sure that a contestant is not drinking more than 1 litre of water after physical activity. Water intoxication deaths in a year is more compared to deaths due to dehydration.
How much water is needed for normal functioning of your body?
8 – 10 glass of water is enough for your body in a day (Around 2 liter of water). You can drink few more glasses (2 or 3 glasses) if you feel thirsty or if you do any physical activity.
If your urine is clear it means you are drinking enough water. On the other hand, if your urine is light/dark yellow it means that your water intake might be low (dehydrated) so you should drink more water.
There is no need to drink 1 litre of water after participating in a marathon or if the climate is too hot. One or two glasses of water is enough to restore the water that you have lost while sweating.
